This bathroom by designer, Alicia Friedmann is beautiful. So clean, soothing, and refined. 20 years from now it will still look fabulous and stylish.

Simple can be stunning! Its all in the details.

Design ingredients:
White/Light floor. I love the hexagonal tile. Creates a nice subtle interest.
White/Light wall tile. She used a mosaic. I equally love the classic subway tile.
White walls. An open wall area would be a great place for art, to give you a pop of color.
Dark vanity. Gives such a great contrast. Legs and open section give it a nice furniture-feel.
Light countertops. No busy patterns here.
Beautiful Light fixtures. So key. Can really set the mood for the space. Can make a space seem more traditional, more modern, more eclectic... whatever you want.
Enticing pedestal tub.... my favorite!

This can also look great with a white vanity. Presently I am favoring the dark wood.

So clean and pretty. Love the shaded sconces, though I would prefer them in a nickel finish. I also wish the medicine cabinets were nickel with a smaller frame. Just a tad too much white... but still gorgeous! Pic via Things that Inspire

Symmetrical and stunning. I like the pop of yellow in the toilet enclosure. The wainscot also adds a touch of elegance. Don't we all wish our bathroom was this big? Pic via WillowDecor

More stunning hexagonal floor tile in a larger size. The chandelier and chair make the space feel more like a "room" and less like a lavatory. You may not have space for a chair, but some baths have space for an ottoman, and many have space for a stunning light fixture! Pic via Things that Inspire

The tub steals the show here! Looks so great against simple white subway tile and a mosaic floor. Also love the contrast with the dark cabinet. Picture of Nate Berkus' bathroom via Elle Decor.

Simple white bathroom gets its wow factor from two antique mismatched mirrors. Pic via absolutelybeautifulthings

Beautiful framed silver mirror is my favorite part of this room. I also like the mosaic rug and crown moulding! Pic via Things that Inspire

White offsets so nicely with rich vanity. The mosaic backsplash with chair rail is a nice finishing detail. pic via alicia friedmann

A big window, a chandelier and a touch of pink really make this room. Pic via Things that Inspire

A white bath doesn't mean you can't have color! Do it with accents. Here it was a rug. So pretty, and again, makes it feel more like a room. Pic via CotedeTexas

The marble floor is too busy for me, but I love the rest! This would look great with a dark floor. Maybe wood or porcelain that looks like wood. Its fantastic, I swear. More on that to come in another post... Pic via Desire to Inspire

You have started a very interesting discussion on bathroom design. I'm a cabinetmaker who really does not want to make kitchens and bathrooms for a living, because the most of what is done in the US is just boxes with a "choice of doors and drawer fronts," the most of which are made in a factory somewhere. Boring. I want to do something else if I can, but what?

European design just absolutely blows my mind, and I find myself reading quite a bit on it, even though these are often modular kitchens and bathrooms that one would simply send away for and have installed by a local craftsman. But what fascinates me is the utter innovation of those designs, so I find myself returning to them quite a bit.

I am also looking to design two bathrooms and a kitchen for my wife in too-small spaces in a tract home, which necessarily lets out those wonderful European designs that excite me so. And whenever I find myself going out on a limb with some idea or another, my wife always grounds me by saying, "If you stick with the classics, you won't grow tired of them."

So, what do you do that is different and yet timeless and practical and stimulating to make if you're a cabinetmaker? Damned if I know, but if I ever figure it out, I mean to make it for us and splash those babies all over the Internet!

What you've written, though, has given me quite a bit to think about, and I thank you for sharing your concepts.
