Since I still feel a bit whelmed with the contradiction between what I want to do and what I physically can do, I figured I should take a bit to focus on what I HAVE done.

The past two weeks have seemed to just disappear and I didn't get much done. I spent a lot of time after work matting the art for the dining room and my bathroom, but for some reason it just took so long. I didn't finish it until I spent 2 hours on Sunday afternoon getting it all done.
Somehow that one little project took up TWO WEEKS of my time.
But oh well, it's finished now and I can finally move on.

At the end of week 5 my roommate and I tackled the walls of our apartment... with PAINT!
We painted one wall in the entryway,

one wall in the living room,

and the kitchen wall that extends into the dining area.

(we'll discuss that mess later)

We're SO happy to finally have more than just white walls in the rest of our apartment. But we were both a little nervous while painting. The teal kept reminding me of mint green or "seaside" blue. And the brown in the living room didn't have that dusty rose tinge to it that my roommate and I saw in the swatch. It had more of an orange-y-ness... that was bordering on "adobe" color. We kept telling ourselves "it's better than white, it's better than white, it's better than white" and continued on painting. The living room dried much much better than we expected and lost that "adobe" undertone and the teal... well, the teal is interesting.

The hallway version (a satin finish) is FABULOUS! Having that wall be one of the first things you see when you walk in the apartment is so nice. In the kitchen, under the cabinets it bring a nice little splash of happiness. But in the dining room... eh... it takes some getting used to. I think it might have to do with the fact that it's a semi-gloss, so it gives it an extra brightness minus the appropriate boost of saturation. We'll see how we feel about it once we get new curtains up and a dining room table in there. If worse comes to worse we can always cover it with a satin finish in the same color... right? Right. :)

This past weekend I spent most of my time out of the apartment, but on Sunday I devoted the entire day to my to-do list. I finished the artwork matting & framing and hung everything up properly. That took about 3-4 hours in itself. Then I went to work on my bathroom.

Cleaning and de-cluttering it weren't much of an issue, but I still spent a significant amount of time doing both, mainly because I wanted to prep for installing my new shelves, which went rather quickly.

I started by completely removing the old, nasty floor shelf. Note to EVERYONE: Don't buy a cheap metal floor shelf for a bathroom... all you'll get is un-dustable dust and tons of rust.

But I guess it's good to have at least SOMETHING to fill the empty and rather ugly space in a bathroom. It sadly looked better WITH that shelf. But I was moving on to bigger and better things... like wall mounted shelves!

My plan was to mount them same way I mounted my magically "supportless" shelves in my bedroom; with metal toggles. But at the last second my plans changed as I came to the realization that there's a very high possibility that lots and lots of pipes may be behind that wall.
I broke out the stud finder and detected two "studs", one MUCH larger than a normal stud and just on the edge of one of my marks. But because I choose things that I WANT over things that might be a more logical or safe choice, I decided to drill anyway... but I would be more careful!

I opted for the standard plastic anchors... and drilling very very slowly.

Thankfully I didn't drill through any pipes, and I now have AMAZINGLY wonderful and surprisingly sturdy, grown-up, bathroom shelves! It changed the feeling of my bathroom so much! I always love my bathroom, and didn't think it was possible to love it even more!

It's better than white! It looks great.

The bathroom shelves are a huge success, too.

Wow! You sure are making up for lost time. Colour is always good, of course, but even professionals don't always get it right the first time! (I loved Patrick's interview with the editor of House Beautiful--Stephen Drucker. He was very understanding about the perils of paint!)
Love those shelves. They add warmth and shininess. Well done.
